What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are microorganisms that are popularly known to be beneficial to your gut health. They are often described as “good bacteria” which could be found in foods such as yogurt or also as supplements. However, according to a recent study, researchers linked the cause of brain fog and bloating to the growth of bacteria in the digestive system due to probiotics.

What did the Study Say?

In the study, 30 patients were questioned on their symptoms and use of antibiotics or probiotics. The results showed that the 22 patients who took probiotics complained of brain fog or increased gas and bloating. Also, 37% ate cultured yogurt daily.

It was reported that bacterial colonies were found in these patient’s small intestines with higher levels of D-lactic acid than normal. The specific bacteria, lactobacillus which is usually found in probiotics, is argued to be the likely cause of the increased D-lactic acid levels. It is mentioned that D-lactic acid can be harmful to brain cells and could affect a person’s cognitive abilities. By stopping probiotics and taking prescribed antibiotics, 85% of patients reported relief of symptoms.

The patients who experienced the brain fog and consumed probiotics were more likely to have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and higher D-lactic acid levels.

What Now?

In conclusion, probiotics are able to produce D-lactic acid, which allows for potential development of symptoms such as brain fog and cause gas/bloating. They recommend that people should consult with a doctor first before consuming probiotics with live bacteria.

If you are interested in taking probiotics, speak with Dr. Treyzon who can evaluate your symptoms and recommend an accurate treatment plan.
