Many patients who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and/or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) are recommended to try the low FODMAP diet. FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols, which are short chain carbohydrates found in commonly eaten foods. This diet is an elimination trial of certain foods categorized as FODMAPs, that trigger and exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms, like bloating, gas, abdominal pain or discomfort.
Dr. Treyzon usually recommends a 6-week elimination phase followed by a controlled reintroduction of food or food groups back into your diet to determine which foods are triggers. Some patients find the elimination phase to be somewhat difficult, as an assorted number of foods, such as garlic, onion, pasta, milk, are removed from the diet.
To make it easier to follow these dietary restrictions, there is a company that sells low FODMAP-friendly products which have been tested and certified by the Monash University, the creators of this specific diet. Products they sell include garlic-free and onion-free sauces, gluten-free and lactose-free granola bars, and even salsa! You can also find various cooking recipes integrating these low FODMAP products on their website.
