What is H. pylori?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is bacteria that infects the stomach lining or upper part of the small intestine and can cause the formation of ulcers. This infection can also increase the risk of stomach cancer.
Generally, most people infected with H. pylori will not develop an ulcer or any symptoms at all. If you do experience symptoms, you can be treated with different combinations of medications that includes antibiotics and antacids. Eradication of the bacteria is confirmed after the course of treatment.
How is Aspirin Helpful?
A recent study investigated the role of aspirin on stomach cancer development in individuals with successful H. pylori eradication. The results showed that daily aspirin usage after eradicating H. pylori correlated with the lowest risk of stomach cancer. Taking doses more than 100 mg for a longer duration was also associated with a lower stomach CA risk. It was shown that aspirin has a stronger preventative effect after eradication of H. pylori.
There is a potential risk of aspirin causing gastrointestinal bleeding and peptic ulcers, so these factors should be assessed in patients before starting a daily usage of aspirin.
